Howard J Smith grew up in Manchester, UK. His father was a Director of Photography and his mother a set designer for the BBC. He first started making short animation films together with his father when he was 4, and began joining his father on shoots from that age as well.
He worked with his father on the award winning Fred Dybnah Steeplejack TV series (On 16mm). By the age of 21 he had moved up to focus pulling on 35mm commercials and began operating Steadicam and remote and geared heads, choosing to specialize in those fields. He became a full time camera/Steadicam operator in 1993 and started lighting in 1996.
From 1996 onward Howard spent most of his time working on major films as camera operator and Steadicam operator, once more learning the art of the Director of Photography (DP) and then shooting commercials in the down time. In 2000 he set up MK-V; a company to make my new designs of a “Steadicam” type stabilizer system. In 2004, he launched my new design and flagship system: the MK-V AR.
He continued working on major films, like Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions and the Harry Potter films, and DP-ing many commercials, shorts, and features. He also has a strong knowledge of VFX and worked as the VFX supervisor on numerous projects.
