JB:IFC Event Picks of the Month: August

Feeling a little dull this month? You're in luck! This month, there is quite an array of events happening - from dance festivals to literature panel discussions to a little cheeky political satire - there is something for everyone! Here are a list of exciting events happening around us this month, for you to spice up your monthly calendar! 


Vans Musicians Wanted: Johor Bahru



The Wknd Sessions, in partnership with Vans Malaysia, is seeking out the best in new and unsigned local acts, with the prize being a chance to play at the international stage of House of Vans Asia Tour 2017, as well as a grant from The Wknd Recording Fund (TWRF). Catch the top 12 finalist bands perform at a FREE live music showcase near you in either KL, JB or Kuching.


For  the JB stop, ska-punk legends Plague Of Happiness will get the crowd skanking in JB alongside to the 4 finalists The CoffeeMateS, Margasatwa, I Lost The Plot and Gurryshang!

2nd JB Contemporary Dance Festival



In its 2nd edition now, The JB Contemporary Dance Festival organises a series of performances and workshops by 3 world-class contemporary dancers from Taiwan and Spain. Register to learn some tips and tricks by Taiwanese dancer Liu Wen Chun, and from the Spain-based Zuk Dance Performing Arts Company, assistant choreographer Miguel Perez and Itsaso A. Cano, director of ZukDance Performing Arts Company. Places are limited, so make sure you register quick by calling Thou Chun at 016 333 5706.

Pop Up Fest 



This first volume of Pop-Up Fest will offer you the most eclectic and quirkiest fair experience that you could ever imagine. With over 60 vendors, it brings together the best of creative handmade novelties, mobile & tech products, fashion & accessories, food & beverages, artisan workshops, and organic products. There is also a massive branded clearance sale to satisfy your retail therapy needs!

N30N Sungai Segget Day & Bazarevo 


The 29th Architectural Student Workshop is taking place in Johor Bahru this edition and is spearheaded by our very own Architecture students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. N30N will be jazzing up the Sungai Segget area with a street furniture competition, a forum by the river entitled 'UNFOLD' as well as a Johor Bahru City Heritage Exploration around the streets of the city! In addition, join them as they rev up Bazarevo - a festival of food, vintage items, locally-designed apparel, with a short film screening to top it all off!

Good Vibes Festival 




Good Vibes Festival - yup, if you haven't gotten your tickets yet. I'm surprised! With world-renowned musicians like ZHU, Phoenix, The Kooks and Kodaline leading the pack, the explosive line-up is set to blow our minds and unleash the dance machines in us. Oh did we also mention that the festival is currently at 95% capacity, so grab your tickets asap!

The Ranch at GohTong Jaya, Genting Highlands 






A Bahasa Malaysia adaptation of the George Orwell classic, "Animal Farm" which follows the independence story of a group of farm animals. Things get messy when true colours are revealed and empty promises float to the surface, as they are entangled in a web of corruption and evil intentions. Brought to you by The Actors Studio and directed by Omar Ali, Kandang is classic revolutionary tale that hits too close to home.

The Cooler Lumpur Festival



The Cooler Lumpur Festival this year, explores the question of what the future may bring and once again, look to the social, political, technological and cultural ideas that have become representative of these times and tell the story of our collective futures. Immerse and expose yourself to hard-hitting topics and conversations on the future in the vast array of screenings, panel discussions, lectures and workshops at the festival. Registration is needed for all events, FREE or ticketed.
