The Johor Bahru Piano Festival 2017 seeks to develop the performance capabilities of young pianists in Johor Bahru to stimulate musical interest, whilst encouraging commitment and excellence to piano studies. This festival offers an important learning experience for aspiring pianists, and hopes to connect musicians of the highest calibre to socialise, learn, and inspire each other and audiences alike.

“Music is far from a zero-sum-game, and it’s always magical to see how the better some players are, the better everyone eventually becomes.” says Festival Director, Suzie Yap.

Strategic collaborators of the festival this year include Official Accommodation and Venue Partner – Amari Johor Bahru, music examining boards – The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and Trinity College London, supporting radio station - Opus Radio, and piano sponsor - Kingsburg Piano.

The Competition

The first part of the festival will see around 110 young pianists battle it out in a healthy competition. Participants are split into 6 categories based on their age group and they will be performing a complete piece of their choice.

The participants will be evaluated based on technical aspects, expressive quality of interpretation, and – most importantly – absolute musicianship of performances. Leading the Jury Panel this year is renowned Malaysian pianist Loo Bang Hean, an active chamber musician and adjunct lecturer at the Institute of Music, UCSI University.

Joining the panel will be ABRSM Examiner Iain Sloan, as well as Trinity College London representative Shuenda Wong.

The award ceremony of the competition will be presented after the concert at the end of the day.

The Concert: Ebony and Ivory

Named after the Stevie Wonder hit song, Ebony & Ivory is a one-night-only showcase of stellar performances by students of Huzza Music Johor Bahru as well as a feature performance by piano extraordinaire, Loo Bang Hean alongside cellist, Jonathan Oh. The repertoire for the night brings the audience through a journey that transcends centuries from classical pieces by Mozart to the iconic romantic melodies of Debussy and Chopin.
