It's VCR Day! JB:IFC Shares Our Favourite VCR Memories

June 8, 2017

Yup, there is a VCR Day, believe it or not! Look it up and maybe, just maybe, there is a Pisang Goreng Day too where you are allowed to gobble down as many of those oily-yet-utterly-satisfying banana fritters. If you're 20 years old and under, you've probably never dealt with this old-school technology prior to your iPads and OK Google. No, it's not some Virtual Computer Reality thingy, but it was a basic necessity in every household for any form of entertainment since the 1970s. The Video Cassette Recorder was our friend. (not even exaggerating!)

We went around the JB:IFC office and asked them about their favourite VCR memories:

---

"My late grandma used to tape Power Rangers for me everyday (Pink Ranger was my queen!) but I think she was too busy one day and had forgotten. Before I could even get angry at her, she scolded me for being rude and then, I cowered and said sorry. " - Chloe, Festival Administrator

---

"My late dad had to put on Toy Story as we requested before bed every single day until one fine day, the tape tangled up and dashed our Toy Story dreams! He also had to put all our tapes inside one big box, because we made the cases into our pencil boxes for school. Those were the days!" - Amirah, Intern

---

"I wasn't a very violent child growing up, but when it came to my faulty VCR I had at home, I remember kicking it for it to start recording. I needed my weekly taping of Phua Chu Kang, and nothing was going to stop me. Thinking about it now, I think I know why it was faulty in the first place haha" - Charmaine, Communications

---

"I don't really remember anything from my childhood but one thing was very clear and that was Lion King! I used to play it on repeat." - Saloni, Business Development

---

"Accidentally recorded over one of my parent's video tapes with Barney. Apparently it was important family footage so I was banned from the VCR for a week! Also, I must have watched Sound of Music at least 100 times as a kid while dancing around the house singing all the songs by heart" - Mercy, Festival Experience Curator

Have you had any frustrating experiences with the VCR when you were a kid?

What was your favourite VCR tape?
